ADVANTAGES OF WIND TUNNEL TEST
In Hong Kong, most urban areas are significantly shielded by topography in far-field and/or many buildings in near-field. Hence, shielding effect on buildings in urban areas will often be significant and wind loads and wind pressures on the buildings will likely be remarkably smaller than those determined based on the Hong Kong Wind Code, which assumes that there are no obstacles in the vicinity of the buildings in both far-field and near-field.
By conducting wind tunnel tests, the effects of topography, surrounding buildings, building shape and dynamic response of buildings on wind flow characteristics can be investigated. As nearly all the factors affecting the wind loads on buildings will be taken account in the wind tunnel test, use of wind tunnel test results for the structural design of buildings will be safe, effective and economical.
Beside of determination for wind loads and wind pressures on buildings, wind and air environments within and around a development due to existence of the development and/or emission from the development are also very important nowadays and they can also be accurately determined by wind tunnel test (such as site wind availability studies, air ventilation assessment studies, micro-climate studies, wind comfort studies and gas dispersion studies).
