Seminar : Coastal Engineering due to Climate Change
Venue : Chamber 3, InnoCentre, 72 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong
Programme Highlights :
Coastal flooding and beach erosion problems in Hong Kong becomes a timely issue after the invasion of typhoons Hato (2017) and Mangkhut (2018). It is likely that the risk of coastal flooding is increased due to climate change which causes sea level rise and increasing typhoon intensity. The current flood protection and beach nourishment facilities may need to be enhanced to deal with the climate change effects.
Aims of this seminar :

To have a basic understanding of the mechanisms of coastal flooding due to tide, surge and waves, with case study of typhoon Mangkhut.
To acquire knowledge on adaptive measures of coastal flooding: retreat, accommodation and protection, with case study of using floodgates.
To have a basic understanding of the mechanisms and impact of beach erosion, with case study of Golden Beach and Lung Mei Beach.
Toaddress Coastal Challenges to Flood Management and to sugget a way forward for Wastewater Managemetn in times of Climate Change.

Seminar : Introduction to Curtain Wall Performance Mockup Testing
Venue : Hong Kong Productivity Council & Facadetech Laboratory Ltd
Programme Highlights :
The programme begins with a seminar presenting the design of curtain wall and also overview of the testing requirement for the following curtain wall performance mockup test:
1. Air Infiltration Test - Static (ASTM E283)
2. Water Penetration Test - Static (ASTM E331)
3. Structural Adequacy Test - Cyclic (PNAP APP37)
Actual samples & simulated conditions in test chamber against specifications will be demonstrated at the HKOKLAS accredited laboratory Facadetech Laboratory Ltd in afternoon.

Seminar : Introduction to Fire Resistance Requirements & Fire Testing
Venue : HOKLAS Fire Test Laboratory of RED at Lung Kwu Tan, Tuen Mun
Programme Highlights :

The programme begins with a seminar presenting the overview of the testing requirement for fire products in HK, i.e. the fire resistance & reaction to fire tests. A brief introduction on the fire resistance tests & the key concern about the difference between the BS 476 Part 20 series and AS BS EN 1363 series.

A real fire test on a passive fire protection product to BS EN 1634-1 was conducted. Throughout the test, members was able to gain more understanding on what the integrity is, and to feel how well the insulation performance that the building elements can be provided.

Programme Highlights :
Wind engineering is an important topic in construciton and in builiding safety. In Wind Code, some wind generated effects (conservative or non-conservative) are not covered. Wind tunnel tests are frequently employed in HK as an alternative of the use of HK Wind Code to obtain the design wind load. Besides, as many buildings in HK are slender, the occupant comfort under strong wind may not be satisfactory. Provision of dampers in those buildings can effectively improve the occupant comfort by reducing wind-induced vibration and acceleration. This seminar provided engineers some principles of wind tunnel tests and damper.
